Shawshank Redemption?

Latest numbers for prison population in US have come out and they are absolutely staggering. 1 in 100 adults in US is in jail. Demographically, 1 in 36 Hispanic and 1 in 15 Black adult is in prison. These numbers are higher than those in China and Russia, two countries where you can attribute the phenomenon to the still evolving political system...but to think that the biggest prisoner population would be in the most evolved democracy in the world surely needs some thought.

My take over this situation is definitely not definitive. Democracy is an interesting beast. Point in consideration: What does it take for everyone in the society to pursue freedom? The answer from this statistic seems to be that the goal of freedom for everyone also means denying it forcefully to those people who want to take away the freedom of others...

Or is it something else?
